7th Grade Summer Reading Project

Due Date: 8/25/2026 with an automatic extension to 9/4/2026 as needed!

 

Dear Rising Seventh Grader,

I am excited to have you in 7th Grade Advanced ELA! We will be working together to become better readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers–works of literature and the written word will be the foundations on which we built our own ideas. This summer reading project is designed to allow you to stretch your thinking muscles and read something great!

You need to choose a book you have not read before and actively engage with it over the summer.

In cooperation with your family, and with parent approval, choose a book that you know will explore what makes a character grow and change and/or face an adverse situation. Whatever book you choose, make sure it is appropriately challenging for 7th grade reading, at least 100 pages, and either a work of fiction or a work of narrative nonfiction (one that tells a story, like a biography or memoir).

Reading Choices

 Please do not read The Outsiders or The Giver. Mrs. Bonner may use either in class with you.

Remember: it is important you have not read the text before this summer.

4)    The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

5)    The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (any of the sequels or prequels will work, too!)

6)    Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston

7)    The Crucible by Arthur Miller

8)    The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

9)    Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stephenson
